Thien: Fuck that. Fuck that law. Jared don't do it.
Marshall: If you're interested, let me know. Remember Ms. Mc******? (Now she's Mrs. M*****...) Her husband is an IP lawyer.
Jared: It's really important to consider why they're even trying to pass this bill so we have a more holistic perspective on the problem. Obviously years of people illegally downloading music and watching movies over the internet is making a significant enough impact on their business--so much so that this bill actually has a case. If people didn't abuse the internet then this probably wouldn't have happened. Like I don't agree with sending random users to jail, and this particular bill goes too far. But I agree with the principal behind it. It's easy to make the argument "oh the government is behind it all", but the employees and owners of the entertainment companies are the ones trying to pass this bill. They are equal constituents of this country, and their rights are being infringed upon every time someone disregards the terms and service and uploads a movie or song on the internet that is not their own. I think it's a bit fallicious when we say they are trying to impede on our rights, when we have been doing that all along. (people or ideas I refer to are just the general consensus I get from the Internet)
Thien: Actually, the way I and a lot of people see it is that this isn't the government imposing themselves on us at all. Contrary, many people feel like it's in fact these corporations who are trying to impose their influence on the average person and are trying to legitimize this through government regulation. You can argue that pirates are infringing on their rights all you want, but in the end corporations are not people and they themselves infringe on the rights of others, especially the artists who record under contracts from them so that whole argument isn't a very strong one.
Even more, these corporations already have a lot of leeway and resources to combat pirating online. You've noticed before how copyrighted songs sometimes get pulled off youtube. The problem is that if this law passes, it creates a slippery slope that will allow corporations and the politicians backed by them to pass more laws that will censor us, infringe on our privacy, and drastically hinder the amount of creative content that is released to the public independently.
Jared: Agreed, but I already conceded that I don't agree with this particular bill. And I also admit that corporations aren't individual people (obviously). BUT, corporations are made up of people, the offices and paperwork don't animate themselves and send in bills to congress. There are people behind them and this is their livelihood. I do not know anyone who makes youtube videos as a full-time job, and if they did make original content I don't think it ever gets pulled down. However, I do know that there is a large umbrella of people that work for the entrainment industry (i.e. writers, directors, song writers, make up artists, actors etc etc) Furthermore, artists who sign under recording companies consented to it. No one pinned them down and forced them to sign... I can probably find any song illegally uploaded to the Internet and download it to my computer in less than 5 minutes. That's uncool and unacceptable. For laws to be fair they have to protect everyones' rights, not just our own. (this is really good critical thinking practice btw)
Thien: Corporations already sue people who post videos with copyrighted songs and videos and stuff on websites already due get pulled down because of copyright stuff. However, if this bill were to pass it would give them the power to shut down entire websites. Seriously, and sites like facebook would have to censor us for fear of its users violating copyrights and being sued for it.
The fact of the matter is that this bill is at the center, short cited. In an attempt to keep business interests and profits, they were potentially leaving the door open to a slew of different censorship laws that might be passed in the future. It really is to sum it down, ether losing profits or losing original content on the internet.
